A Walk in the Clouds
             MOUNTAIN HIKING

Oaxaca Tours offers mountain hiking excursions

The Sierra Norte or Sierra de Juarez is set in a uniquely privileged location; seven of the nine types of vegetation existing in Mexico are found here in nearly four thousand plant species. This means that in the space of a few hours, it is possible to see ecosystems separated by thousands of miles in other parts of the world.

This region boasts a diversity of fauna, with over four hundred bird and three hundred and fifty butterfly species. The common land areas of Ixtlan are home to the six forest cat species found in Mexico, including the jaguar, and endangered animals such as the spider monkey and the tapir.

The sierra is also the site of the mixed pine-oak forests classified by the World Wildlife Fund as being the richest and most varied on earth, and the Oreoamunia mexicana forest, one of the world’s oldest ecosystems, estimated to be over twenty million years old.

The Zapotec communities call themselves “the cloud people”, a fitting description for the inhabitants of this mountain range. Driven by the prevailing north winds, the clouds sweep across the Gulf of Mexico until they meet with the rugged sierra, instantly enveloping the mountain villages, perched 3,000 meters above sea level, in shrouds of mist. The scenery here is splendid and in some places, sublimely beautiful, and at this height, a journey along the mountain footpaths can literally become a walk among the clouds.

These communities would like to invite you to share the secrets of their footpaths. A specially trained guide will accompany you on walks through the forests of trees and moss or ride down the ravines on mountain bikes.

If you enjoy contact with nature, come and explore the pathways for yourself... we are sure you’ll have an unforgettable experience. After all, one doesn’t always get the change to walk through the clouds.

We will pick you up at your hotel in the morning and head out (by car) to Benito Juárez about an hour outside of Oaxaca City. This day trip is about 6 to 7 hours. Actual hiking time is about 3 hours (you decide the pace). The hike takes place at approximately 10,000 feet above sea level-- For avid hikers only.
